art costume

the year was 1984. art and fashion combined to create clothing that was impossible to live in (and, for that reason, unlikely to catch on). vinyl clothing doesn't breathe. wooden spoons don't flex. the meaning was in the moment, and that's what the fashion audience paid to see at the Club Lingerie in Hollywood -- a bizarre extravaganza of costume run riot… fashion for risktakers, fashion without rules. publicity.

1984 | fashion without rules

1985 | weddings without rules

weddings without rules followed in 1985. born in a fit of angst and codependency, and billed as an artfashion performance, it played to a standing-room-only crowd of sweating fashionmongers at the Park Plaza Hotel across the street from MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. it must have been a slow news month. the local media were rabid. publicity.
